Self employed
Required to start in September 2026
We are looking for an outstanding cello teacher teacher to join our thriving Music Department, within a highly successful girls’ school. The ability to teach the double bass at beginner/intermediate standard could also be advantageous.
The role
The successful candidate will be an outstanding musician, an effective communicator, and an inspiring teacher, able to teach the cello from beginner to diploma standard. If there is demand, there might also be opportunities to teach beginners on the double bass.
You will teach individual pupils throughout the Senior School age range (Year 7-13). Depending on the interests and skills of the appointee, there may also be opportunities to coach ensembles and to take part in school performances.
You will be engaged on a self-employed basis, term time only. You will be responsible for creating your own timetable, in line with school guidelines, to ensure weekly lessons of 35 minutes are taught to your pupils. The number of pupils will vary due to demand but is likely initially to be approximately 4 violin and 2 viola pupils per week.
The school
Oxford High School is a high-achieving selective girls’ day school. The Music Department is popular and active, with over 200 individual music lessons per week delivered by nearly 30 visiting music teachers at the Senior School. There is a linked Prep School at a nearby site, which also has an active and successful Music Department; some Music staff work across both sites. The department offers a broad range of ensembles, from beginner to advanced level. The senior ensembles regularly perform in prestigious venues around Oxford. Practical and academic exam results are exceptionally strong; our most advanced pupils frequently gain places in national ensembles, and a number pass diplomas before they leave the school.
